A well run pet shop will give many clues as to its concern about pets and the quality of the pets and products they sell. Well run shops have knowledgeable workers who will greet you at the door. These pet shops are well lighted and clean with very few pet odors. The workers are able to answer pet owner questions and give informed answers to a customer. The employees or owners will never try to diagnose pet problems that should be diagnosed by a veterinarian. They will give simple ownership answers to questions about nutrition and health but do not recommend medications or treatments for physical problems or illness.
The pets offered for sale in these pet stores are clean well taken care of and healthy. There will not be many dead fish in the tanks. It is possible that some fish will die but they should not be left in the tanks. If you notice a dead fish that has been there for a long time it is not a good pet store. The store will also recommend books to help improve owners understanding of the pet they are caring for and appropriate pet products. They will not push a sale driven by what they thing the owner wants to hear.
